I've come across a problem booting a P4 + 1G ram and a Radeon9700 on an Hitachi21" monitor, using DSL 5.3.1.I have to boot with "knoppix-txt" to see the boot screen and I know the CD is good as it works fine on other machines. The problem appears to be with the xserver. "fatal IO error 104 (connect reset by peer) on xserver ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed)with 0 events remaining. I've tried the parameters xmodule=ati & xmodule=radeon with no success. Looking at the .xauthority file on knoppix/root it shows 101 bytes. On the ramdisk under DSl it shows 0 bytes, is this correct? Any suggestions greatfully received. Posted by hasty on Jan. 25 2004,19:32
Just tried with the latest knoppix and it booted fine. Feels like bloatware......after dsl Since John's working on the next version I'll wait:) Posted by hasty on Feb. 24 2004,18:27

I did have a blank screen on a LCD monitor, and got around that with theknoppix cheatcode: knoppix vga=normal That may have worked in 0.5.3.1, don't know about your setup, etc. I mention this, as I found two things that 6 can't do or doesn't have: l. wvdial 2. Opera 6.12 I had a modem that wvdial could detect in 0.5.3.1, but not in 6. So, I had to copy wvdial from 0.5.3.1 to 6.0 and put it in as a restore/backup, so I could get it back on reboots. I gave up entirely on getting Opera 6.12 to either install correctly, or run right once you do locate it, and try and run it. Font problem, been advised to stick to 0.5.3.1 if I want Opera. I like it, since it will restore quickly compared to MozillaFirebird. --- Posted by hasty on Feb. 25 2004,08:19
Orig post wasn't meant as a complaint about DSL. Just an observation With 5.3 the only machines I couldn't get running due to video problems were the above and an onboard V3. If you can't see the boot up you can't configure........ V6 has cured both of them. Like others I'd like higher refresh rates but thats just being greedy..... One thing I've learnt over the years with computers is never buy the initial product, always wait for the bugfix version |
