hello, I've installed DSL to an old laptop I've had hanging around for awhile. in textmode, ie. knoppix 2, at boot, the whole screen is taken up by dsl, but when I let it boot normally to x, there is a dark band all the way around the screen, and only about 60 percent of the screen size is used.

I've tried all the different options/modes under the start script, the one with the choice of vesa, etc. changing stuff there doesn't weem to have any effect.

thanks,

JP

Are you sure you tried the framebuffer? If the whole screen is taken up when you type "knoppix 2", which uses the framebuffer, XFbdev should use the whole screen as well.
Also, could you please tell us the model of the laptop?

That's probably what it is, you need to select fbdev Xserver. But first, when
the boot prompt comes up, do this:
boot: vga=789
That will give you 800x600 at 32 bpp.
If that won't work on your hardware, try:
vga=771  (800x600 8 bpp)
vga=787  (800x600 16 bpp)
or
vga 784   (640x480 16 bpp)
You always have to give the vga=(whatever) when you use
fbdev xserver.

thanks for your help, its an AST ascentia J10, (Pentium 75, 16 MB RAM, 9 GB hdd) the video system is a chips and technology inc.,

'chips 65548 vga 40kb pci bios v.421(A_106_D6)'

according to the splash screen at power-on.

i've tried the vga= options at the 'boot:' screen. 789,784,787, dont have any effect, and 771 causes a black screen.

try fb800x600 or fb1024x768 as your boot option

uh oh, I realized my post should have read:
boot: knoppix vga=789
Although that might not fix your problem, others might read this and need to be able to get that to work.
I use it on a toshiba laptop I have, and it works.
Also, I have a Dell UltraSharp LCD monitor, and vga=normal is needed there, or I get a black screen.
