I am creating a custom icon for xmms and need to find the .xtdesktop to replace the current icon. I gather from the icon properies that its located in a directory called /.xtdesktop. So I searched for it. One person said they found it in the /home/dsl another said its in /etc/skel. Yet when I looked in those directories(I used both emelfm and bash) and all I could find was a file called events in both directories(/home/dsl also had the mail sub directory) Am I missing something or is it me being a complete dumba** again?(i think its both lol) Posted by meltdown_override on Dec. 12 2006,05:52
I just answered my own question. wow I am actually learning something. The .xtdesktop is a hidden directory its not list with hte ls command in bash(why?) After years of M$ Windblows crude, linux is finally blowing the dust out of my brain.

Files that begin with a dot are "hidden". In Emelfm either click the "H" button or press Ctrl+h. In Bash you can list hidden files using "ls -a" or "ls -A". You can also list just the hidden files with "ls -d .*"/home/dsl are your active configuration files. /etc/skel is where the files in /home/dsl originated, and is used for remastering, for giving new user accounts a starting point, and as a way to replace personal configs that you may have destroyed. By the way, there is no file called /.xtdesktop. "/" is the root directory, so /.xtdesktop would have to be a file in the root directory....and it ain't.
