Pressing CTRL at boot gives me the LILO Boot Menu. At the bash prompt, typing VGA=788 and pressing enter to boot into that mode results in a prompt reading:

No such image. [Tab] shows a list.

Pressing the tab key yields nothing, in fact, no startup options work at all, they all give me the same message as above.

I'm trying to get the !@#$! thing to work properly in an 800x600 mode.

Any ideas?

I don't think thats bash ...?

vga=788 is a boot/cheatcode that can be passed to the kernel on startup - it's not the kernel image.  For lilo, you can put this in the APPEND= section.  Not sure how lilo's quick editing works though.
