Basically I can't get it to stop looking like that old safe mode in windows 98 without shrinking the screen so that it's sitting in the middle of the monitor surrounded by a large black space. (Also, crappy color is accompanied by a lack of any icons).

Searching through the forums, getting "Xfree86" seems to be the advice I would probably get, but I'm using DSL-N, and that doesn't seem to be available in 'my DSL' for DSL-N.

So what should I try next?

XFree86 for DSL works fine in DSL-N

Okay, sorry, I'm new to this whole linux things and I keep ignoring stuff stupidly.
Anyway, I found it at < this site > and found some instructions < in the wiki >, where I should have thought to look in the first place...

Unfortunately that seems to be written for someone who knows things I don't, because I'm having a lot of trouble with it.

Probably the best thing to do is to search the web for an XF86Config-4 file that matches your hardware - there are also some example config files included with the extension.
