I have installed dsl on my HD and all seemed to go fine, but it refuses to start X, leaving me at the command prompt, which I am getting very good at using! I have a feelling that it has something to do with my hardware. Some time ago the integrated graphic chip (sis 5579) packed in and I put a pci Matrox Millennium II card in to replace it an all seems to be fine. I feel that Linux is detecting the old chip still and setting up to support that one instead of the pc card. How do I resolve this and get the kernel to ignore the integrated chip? In Winblows it is simply a case of disabling it in the hardware properties and does not cause much heart ache! Any advice would be great, but remember that I am quite new to the Linux way of life. Is there any way to disable the integrated graphics in the bios? You could also check the following pages to see if you can pass an option to Xvesa to fix the problem:< http://www.xfree86.org/current/Xkdrive.1.html > < http://www.xfree86.org/current/Xvesa.1.html > < http://www.xfree86.org/current/Xserver.1.html > Posted by compaqjohn on Sep. 27 2004,20:38
Hi thanks for links. There is nothing in the bios that would help. This is the actual error message that I get after log in "XI0:fatal IO error 104 (connection reset to peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events running" this makes no sense to me at all and would love to solve this problem. Any help would be greatJohn Posted by ke4nt1 on Sep. 27 2004,21:37
compaqjohn ..1. When you ran the HDInstall from LiveCD, was it able to startup an X session ? 2. If not, can you add exclusions to your bootup string to make it work? Will those same exclusions work in your lilo conf. for your HDInstall ? skaos .. The tips on XVesa are great, tnx.. I wonder if the -force or -swaprgb options could help some of our users who have "color troubles" ? 73 ke4nt Posted by compaqjohn on Sep. 28 2004,05:19
Thanks Ke4nt11. No, after the Hd install I couldn.t start X, and I couldn't start X when I ran it from memory with a boot disk. 2. I can add strings in the lilo box and they work. The only changes to the lilo.conf that I have made is to add "noapm" as I was having a bit of a problem booting orginally and this has fixed that problem. I'm just wondering if it is possible to download the complete and full version of X11R6 and install it? Has dsl got enough grunt for this? If I could this would rule out the possibility of have some bad files in the system. Thanks john Posted by skaos on Sep. 28 2004,10:29
ke4nt1: I think I tried the swaprgb option on my laptop some time and if I remember correctly, it didn't work.compaqjohn: Just a thought - how do you boot DSL? If you use loadlin from a dos/win partition you need a clean dos/win boot without accessing autoexec.bat and config.sys (you can do this by pressing F5 or F8 when booting dos/win). If this is not the case, then I think you're correct when you say that Linux is detecting the old chip. In the full XFree86 I think there is an option to set the pci slot for the graphics card (even the integrated chip uses pci). I have no idea if this is possible with Xvesa. skoas: thanks. the way that I done the Hd install was to set it up on its own partiton and to start it with lilo like most linux distro's that I have seen. This problem has been bugging me now for quite some while and I have tried almost everything I can at this stage. I will download the distro again, just to make sure that it is proper. I downloaded the full X11 and tried to install it but keep getting an " can't find cc" or something like that when I do a make I don't know if the two problems are connected?

The"cant find cc" is because there is not any development files on thislittle 50MB distro.. You will need to install gcc g++ and make if you want to compile from sources. Many folks have used the"apt-get" utilities to obtain already compiled applications. Search the forums for X11 or XF86 for more info .. 73 ke4nt Posted by caturok on Oct. 13 2004,09:21
