Virtual Desktop?Forum: X and Fluxbox Topic: Virtual Desktop? started by: Medix Posted by Medix on Dec. 20 2004,00:36
Hi all,I've finally managed to get DSL to boot properly and so far so good (this thing rocks), BUT I can't see all of the desktop.. the max resolution on the laptop I'm using (Toshiba 400CDT) is 800x600x16 (best color depth; it suppors 1024x1280 but color depth sucks). Is there a 'virtual desktop' option in fluxbox that I can turn off? I just want the entire desktop to fit on the screen.. Thanks! - Medix Posted by gurru on Dec. 20 2004,02:12
I used to have one of those.Have you tried...
or you could try this one at the boot screen...

oopsreplace that 1024x768 with 800x600 Posted by Medix on Dec. 20 2004,03:47
Nope.. didn't work.. I'm using a HD install.. so.. I modified lilo.conf (the section that says 'append="..." ') ran lilo rebooted X boots and cursor still shows up centered on the 'virtual' display.. (which actually shows up in the lower-right quadrant of the screen).. I've also tried vga=normal.. Any other suggestions? I thought maybe there was an X config that I'm missing.. - Medix Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 20 2004,05:22
You can try booting with "dsl xsetup" and try out a few different Xvesa resolutions. If you like your selection, then remove the xsetup boot parameter and your .xserverrc configuration file will automatically be used on your next bootup. Posted by Medix on Dec. 20 2004,16:20
I've tried that too.. I'm using the Xvesa server, 800x600x16.. the laptop doesen't seem to like much else.. I tried running the frame buffer server, but it won't run.. I get an error message (I'll have to post it later, I don't have it with me now).. - Medix Posted by Medix on Dec. 23 2004,04:19
Hi all,I tried a few more things today.. one of them was setting the DPI in the Xsetup.. but still to no avail.. When I try to run Xfbdev I get the following error: XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. This happens even when I specify frame buffer mode in the kernel parameteres.. Any thoughts? - Medix Posted by Medix on Dec. 23 2004,04:34
Another update.. I found another post that asked the same question about the frame buffer problem.. and it said to specify the fb option at boot.. which I tried (again) incase I had done it wrong the last time.. Still nothing.. So then I ran xsetup and just for kicks I set the resolution to 640x480x16 and NOW the screen fits. when I run Xvesa -listmodes it shows that the card supports 800x600 up to 16 bit color. If this is true, why can't I make it fit on the viewable screen in this mode? I *thought* it *should* do this automatically.. is there anything vital that I'm missing? - Medix Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 23 2004,05:44
Your laptop video card can probably do 800x600 but your LCD screen cannot. This mode is still listed as "supported" even though the only way that you can use it is to plug your laptop into a computer monitor and switch over to this monitor. At least that is my best guess. That's about all I can figure at this point.. Looks like the picture frame project is dead in the water until I can get a better laptop.. all of the pictures I have are 1024x768.. Thanks for the help though! - Medix Posted by mute on Dec. 24 2004,12:36
Have you looked at the XF86Config file? Should be in /etc/X11 or something. I believe it sets the desktop size.

Not yet.. But that's next on the list to test.. Medix |
