Installed flux 0.9.11. works good. Is menu transparentcy possible?
Posted by ke4nt1 on Dec. 22 2004,15:51
Here is a screenshot using the fluxbox-0.9.11( I adjusted the "alpha" settings in fluxbox to get this effect ) Not only menu transparency, but titlebars as well.. < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....3;st=70 > 73 ke4nt Posted by Patrick on Dec. 22 2004,16:07
How?(my style = Cthulhan) I disabled (in Cthulhan) the rootcommand (see below) because i want xplanet to start in the background (if i don't i have to wait untill xplanet will refresh the screen) #rootCommand: bsetbg -solid "#3a404b" I found the transparency menu and i set "menu" to 160... But that doesn't do the trick... Posted by caulktel on Dec. 22 2004,17:00
I also am waiting for the answer.

Hey Patrick,I set mine to 190, then exit Fluxbox and restart, it works fine but won't take effect till you restart WM. Posted by Patrick on Dec. 22 2004,17:34
doesn't work for me...

Must have something to do with the theme, I am using Almost X, and Perfect blue. Both have transparent menus now. Not sure what the other two settings are for in transparent settings.

You don't need to exit the window manager (which also closes X), but just reload the init file. There should be a menu item for that (reconfig). If not, bring up the command dialog and type 'reconfigure'. I think it's also mapped to Alt+F12.window alpha is for window titlebars. You can specify a different amount of transparency depending on whether or not the window has focus. You can also right-click on the toolbar and change transparency for that. I played a bit with the alpha settings/themes/ and found that some themes do show some sort of transparentcy. What i get is a "see-through" fluxbox-menu (which is what i want) but the see-through part is not what my root-desktop shows (which is xplanet/the moon). In stead i get to see the standard fluxbox-style.

This transparency is an illusion, not actually transparency. If I understand it correctly, the illusion is accomplished by displaying a section of the root window as the menu background, and changing it each time the menu is moved. Applications are apparently not considered part of the root window, even those applications running in that window. This isn't a limitation of Fluxbox, but of the X server. Even XFree86 fakes transparency. The only way I know of to have true transparent windows in Linux is by using X.org.

I just modify following command in the "~/.fluxbox-0.9.11/init"session.screen0.menu.alpha:120 restart WM Posted by rossjman1 on Jan. 19 2005,01:01
How come the font size is bigger when using this new version, and how can I change it back?
Posted by mikshaw on Jan. 19 2005,03:48
If you are referring to the toolbar fonts for the clock and workspace names, that's just part of the style...you can change it by editing the style file or by switching to a different style. If you have larger fonts elsewhere, such as in the menu or in windows, then there's something wrong. By the way, Fluxbox 0.9.12 was released today so there will be a new extension available after a week or so of testing. Any cosmetic suggestions are welcome (nothing which requires code modification). I remember there was one suggestion to have only 3 workspaces as default to keep the pager from doubling up.
Posted by libretto on Jan. 19 2005,12:52
I tried 0.9.11 and didn't notice any obvious difference, all right I hadn't tweaked the settings. I agree with the 3 desktops idea. Also, is it worth having some transparency and rounded corners for the default style so it shows the updated fluxbox at its best (as it were)
Posted by mikshaw on Jan. 19 2005,13:36
I chose not to use transparency in the default config for the benefit of users who don't have the power to waste on it....it's a simple thing to change through the menu for those who want it. I'm not sure how much difference the rounded corners make, if any....i'm also wondering if it's worth having as default. You may not think there's much difference between flux-dev and flux-stable, but personally I think flux-stable is closer to Blackbox than it is to flux-dev, and I use many of the new features daily -- things like the apps file, command dialog, and iconbar are invaluable improvements. 0.9.12 has support for jpg/png images using imlib2 (compile option, disabled by default). If this feature were included it would mean a slightly(?) larger package and maybe require a shell wrapper. Any thoughts on this? Posted by rossjman1 on Jan. 19 2005,23:05
There is something wrong then. I'm using the same theme (AlmostX), and everything related to the theme is more than 2x as big(even the close/minimize/maximize/sticky buttons). Does this new version require xfree86?
Posted by mikshaw on Jan. 19 2005,23:35
no, that would be mean =o)I don't know what to tell you really, except maybe you have enabled antialiasing in fluxbox? I never use it because I end up with big fonts. Do your fonts stay big when you switch the style? Posted by rossjman1 on Jan. 20 2005,00:01
I have antialiasing disabled. I think I'm just going to stick with the old version for now.

Are you using dsl 0.9.2? I'm still using 0.9.1, so maybe there's something incompatible with the latest. Did you try switching styles? Have you added/removed any fonts? Have you used any of the previous fluxbox extensions to confirm if this is specific to 0.9.11?
Posted by rossjman1 on Jan. 20 2005,21:39
I'm using 0.9.2. I have a floppy install, so I'm not changing versions anytime soon. I installed this new fluxbox version, and everything is bigger, which sucks because I have a small res. There is also thin white lines around everything, which makes everything look terrible. Even when I use transparency, the white lines are nontransparent. To try to fix these problems, I looked through the init file for anything having to do with fonts. Nothing, except for antiantilizing, which is disabled. Yesterday, I tried to install the Artwitz(sp?) fonts. No luck. The font size doesn't change when I switch themes. I will post before(old fluxbox) and after(new ver.) screenshots of my desktop today, so you can see for yourself.

Okay, thanks for the screenshots. That helps a lot. Something went wacky with the font itself rather than the font size. In your first screenshot you're using 'fixed', which is a standard terminal font. In the second screenshot you have some serif thingy...I don't know what it is exactly but it's definitely an entirely different font. I saw the same font yesterday while messing with fluxbox in DSL. I'm not sure if this applies, but in my case it had to do with trying to use a style with a typo in the path. I guess it just used a default font or something. Fixing the path in init fixed my problem. I recommend checking the init to see if the proper style file is listed, and after that checking the style file itself to see if it's using a font which exists on your system. Posted by rossjman1 on Jan. 20 2005,23:42
I'm pretty new with DSL and Linux. How do I find out which fonts are already installed on my system? And, yes, now that I look at theme both side by side I can see that the size is not only different, by the actual font as well.
Posted by mikshaw on Jan. 21 2005,03:23
you can use the xfontsel application....I'm sure there are other ways, but I've never been an expert on fonts.I tested a couple of things with flux-0.9.11 today....one was to load a style with no font specified. This resulted in fluxbox using fixed. The other test was to load a style with a non-existent font (listed a font in the style, but it didn't really exist). This resulted in some large font being used. It wasn't the same one, but was definitely larger. Posted by RoGuE_StreaK on Jan. 21 2005,04:40
The style you are using there is almostX, correct? I had the same trouble with fonts on my theme (rogue), try replacing the font line with:*font: -*-lucida-medium-r-*-*-*-100-*-*-*-*-*-* AlmostX (and mine) only specified "acqui" as font, gave no sizing or anything like that. Works fine with normal fluxbox, but it looks like the new fluxbox wants you to specify a size. (I think my theme in the repository has been updated). My theme also has the trouble of the white border instead of the black. Haven't figured out what's causing it yet (haven't spent a great deal of time looking, though, as I only boot DSL every now and then - need to make a concerted effort to get everything up and running they way I like it, so I can use it more often!) (PS EDIT) Oh, just read back a few pages, you ARE using almostX . Might help if I thoroughly read the thread instead of just tagging on the end... If I remember correctly, I think I used the almostX style as the basic template for mine, tweaked most of it, but obviously hadn't touched the font part... Posted by RoGuE_StreaK on Jan. 24 2005,07:24
OK, found out what causes the "white border" problem in both my theme and almostX, it's because there is no "borderColor" specified; add this, and the border works fine (border settings are usually down near the end of the file)borderColor: #000000 Will try to send in my updated theme when I get the chance to repackage it. Posted by ke4nt1 on Jan. 24 2005,09:46
Rogue...I added the style file you sent me..... ...after I read this post .. Seems it got lost and forgotten in my volumes of emails.. Sometimes a yell or a swift kick works! Send me another if you need to, for the border correction. 73 ke4nt Posted by wirebook on Feb. 12 2005,08:40
Yay! Okay, fluxbox 0.9.11 works on my machine. The transparent menus and all are cool, but how do I make xterminal transparent? There wasn't an option for this, was there?
Posted by mikshaw on Feb. 12 2005,14:10
That depends on your x terminal...it has nothing to do with fluxbox.rxvt doesn't have transparency, so check out the aterm extension instead. |
