1024x480 resolutionForum: X and Fluxbox Topic: 1024x480 resolution started by: MalphasWats Posted by MalphasWats on Feb. 08 2005,18:41
Hi, I've got a Sony C1VE laptop which has a weird resolution. I've installed DSL to the HD and I'd like to know how to make it display this resolution.Whilst looking on the web I found a page that said I needed to put
into the XF86Config file, which I have done, I've then gone through and changed all the "Screen" entries to just have this option in but it still uses 640x480 which only uses half the monitor. Have I missed something? Thanks very much -Malphas Posted by hawki on Feb. 08 2005,20:40
Hi In most cases the default configuration uses Xvesa. Have you tried using the Xvesa button in DSLpanel. It seems to do a pretty good job figuring out what resolutions are available on my hardware anyway. Good luck Posted by MalphasWats on Feb. 08 2005,20:44
Hi, thanks. I have tried it and it either gives a blank list with an 'OK' button, or it sometimes gives the option '640x480'.I've been searching all over, but I'm a Linux Noob so it's hard to know where to start. thanks -Mal Posted by hawki on Feb. 08 2005,21:00
HiProbably your next best step is to CRTL-ALT-BKSP to kill the xserver. Then type xsetup.sh select the options you want to try. Then type startx It may take some trial and error but usually you can find a setting that will work. Then again there are some combinations of hardware that just refuse to cooperate. good luck Posted by MalphasWats on Feb. 08 2005,21:12
Tried that, it doesn't give 1024x480 as an option, and choosing any of them still just gives me 640x480.Thank you though! I'll keep searching about for something Posted by hawki on Feb. 08 2005,21:34
HiI did a quick google search and I think you are right. It appears that machine needs a kernel or driver patch to make use of the whole screen. You are probably not going to get it working right with generic kernels and drivers. It sure looks like a nice little laptop to work with anyway. Here is one link to some info. < http://www.stevebarr.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/barrst/goto.pl?c1vnlinks > Good luck Posted by skaos on Feb. 10 2005,15:43
The problem is Xvesa which is a slimmed down X-server supporting only a few standard resolutions. You need a full Xfree installation which I think is available as a myDSL package.

Thanks for your help guys.I've installed the full version of XFree86 and set up a XF86Config-4 file, but it still doesn't seem to work, when I reboot, or type 'startx' I get a black screen that slowly fades to full white. If I hit ctrl-alt-bkspc, there are a few errors "faiiled to load module pex5.so (module does not exist)" "failed to load module xie.so ..." "ATI(0) failed to set up write-combining range (0xfd000000,0x800000)" and so on. What does this mean? Thanks -malph |
