Hi i have a hdinstall of the latest dslrelease and i want to install XFree86 so i can watch highquality-movies. Ive downloaded XFree 86 from myDSL and then i changed the .xserverrc file to exec /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86  -nolisten tcp. Then i copied the file XFree86config-4_oldernvidia to /etc/X11/ and renamed the file XFree86config-4_oldernvidia to XFree86config-4. And when i restart x i get a errormessage. What could be wrong? I have a Nvidia geforce 4 mx. I also tried with the file called nvidia accel ready. Is there anything else i need to do?
I also have a problem with the alsamixer muting itself after every restart.

Tnx for help

This is the errormessage:

giving up.
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to x server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error.

If I read your post correctly..
Both the XF86Config-4 files you were trying to use are for nvidia drivers,
( i.e. nvidia.dsl ) which is a separate download from the xfree86.dsl

Since you have an nvidia card, you should install the nvidia.dsl,
then try to startup X again..

Otherwise, use the XVesa or other driver version of the XF86Config-4 file,
to get Xfree running without the 3-D acceleration.
( there are several found on the internet for using the 2-D version of "nv" )

I get this errormessage now.

xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up.
xinit: unable to connect to x server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error

I'd change the "&>/dev/null" to "&>x.log" and attempt to startx again.  It will fail again, but you'll at least now have a log file to check what might be going wrong.

Is .xserverrc executable?

I got an error message similar to your first one, so I typed in /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 and it (sort ot...) worked...
