72+hzForum: X and Fluxbox Topic: 72+hz started by: andrewphoto Posted by andrewphoto on June 25 2005,15:13
In DSL, I read that the refresh is 60hz.Less than 72 is not good for the eyes. Can I install XFree86.dsl, create a XF86Config-4 file with Henk1955's 'generic?' vesa or framebuffer (which one?) scripts, and in addition? perhaps install my display driver (S3 Savage IX, Savage 4.0.3 binary.tgz.) Or is it not that simple? All I want to achieve is 72+hz & not be taxing my hardware. Any replies will be most appreciated. andy. Posted by aguest on June 29 2005,01:56
The video card decides what refresh rate it wants to use. Try different screen resolutions and color depths, some resolutions may use a higher refresh rate than others.

dear andy,i had the same 60Hz nightmare for very long time, and recently have solved it by installing XFree86 and nvidia drivers (because i have nvidia card). so here's what i did: 1. install XFree86 (via myDSL browser) 2. copy one of default config files to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 3. modify the file (i have deleted resolutions which i will never use, and changed max. refresh rate to 75 4. shutdown X 5. startx i think thats all what i did. it worked for me so i hope it will for you. good luck! oh, and there was one other file... /home/dls/.xserverrc mine looks like this: exec /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -nolisten tcp thats all i think Posted by strong on July 27 2005,14:14

I believe you can use the xfree86.dsl from the mydsl browser under 'System'.

Try the XFree86.dsl myDSL extension....it's much simpler.< http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub....m > Installing myDSL extensions: < http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub....pdfdocs > < http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/talk/node/69 > Posted by Your Fuzzy God on July 27 2005,15:06
Make it easy on yourselfDouble click the MyDSL icon on the desktop and navigate to: System-->XFree86.dsl.info Download and it automatically installs. Ain't life easy? -Cody < Mainframe Computers > ####EDIT#### YAR!! mikshaw beat me again! #####/EDIT##### Posted by strong on July 28 2005,08:59
I have downloaded Xinstall.sh and checked my binary version with :#sh Xinstall.sh check (Linux-ix86-glibc23) Downloaded XFree 4.5.0 and installed all fine but I cant find the configuration file, checked the manual and it can only be placed at theses locations : /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/XF86Config /usr/X11R6/etc/XF86Config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config Posted by mikshaw on July 28 2005,14:21
If you installed it from a deb package then you may have to create a config file yourself. There should be at least one tool included (probably 2 or 3) to help you with this task. xf86config, xf86cfg, xf86setup, or something like that...look in /usr/X11R6/bin or check the manual again. There may also be an example file you can use as a base. On my Suse system I have /usr/X11R6/lib/XF86Config.eg and in Slackware /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/getconfig/cfg.sample Posted by SaidinUnleashed on July 28 2005,17:38
There are several premade config files in /home/dsl/XFree86_Config_files

By the looks of it, strong installed from deb or other package rather than myDSL (XFree86.dsl is version 4.3.0), so those files don't exist.
