can't get out of 640x480Forum: X and Fluxbox Topic: can't get out of 640x480 started by: kaens Posted by kaens on July 24 2005,03:53
Alright, I hate to bother you guys with what is probably a simple question like this, but as a disclaimer I searched around, a lot, before posting this, and I tried everything I could think of. The problem is this: I can boot into DSL in 640x480, any color depth, no problem everything looks fine. But if I try to do it in any other resolution, with any color depth nothing looks right at all. I won't see any icons on the desktop, what is normally the light orangish color is now light blue, things pixellate depending on mouse focuse. I am not able to boot with any of the fb modes, X won't even start. it spits an error about not being able to find a module, (I think.). So what could be causing this problem? Suggestions? Need more info? Posted by cbagger01 on July 24 2005,04:40
You probably have one of the Intel integrated graphics video systems. They don't do any VESA mode well besides 640x480 (I assume this is because the MS Windows boot screen uses this resolution) If so, you can give the xfree86.dsl extension a try and see if you can get your graphics to work with it. Read all of the instructions carefully because it is not a "one-click install" kinda program. Also, you could try this. Boot with: dsl vga=normal xsetup Then choose XVesa and choose 800x600 and 8 bit color depth Then after booting, type this in a terminal window: beaver /home/dsl/.xserverrc and then add this command: -swaprgb just before the -mouse command in the line. Then save the file and Exit Window Manager Then, from the text prompt, type startx to reload Posted by ke4nt1 on July 24 2005,04:41
EDIT ( cbagger01 and I posted same time, sri for doubling posts )Yep, need mo' info. Wat kind of computer? Graphics card/chip? What kind of install? Does it work from LiveCD? Did you try booting from liveCD using the boot option fb800x600 ( not dsl fb800x600 , only fb800x600 ) ..then choosing xfbdev instead of xvesa at the blue questions prompts ? If your graphics card is only a meg or so of memory, you may have issues.. My lil toshiba laptop is like that.. I used the XFree86.dsl , and it now works, but that requires some setup to do properly.. 73 ke4nt Posted by kaens on July 24 2005,05:01
Yeah I do have one of those intel integrated graphics chipsets. I believe its i810 (running on a generic emachines T2542) if I remeber correctly I'm trying your various suggestions now (this is off of livecd, but with plans to do a hd install anyhow, so I'll try the booting just fb, and not dsl fb...don't know why I didn't think of that before.)Thanks for the help! Xfree86.dsl did the trick! Thanks again!
