When I try to boot DSL in my old windows machine, I get a blank screen after the picture of the penguin and DSL appear.
I use a CD and a bootable floppy. I think it is not connecting to the CD because the CD drive never makes a sound. When I try other options it loads me with the shell, but the shell is very limited, and I can't do anything with it.

Try to boot with your old operating system and copy the CD disk contents over to your hard drive, IE:

C:\KNOPPIX\KNOPPIX

Note the uppercase letters.

Then try the boot floppy again.

I'm having the same problem. Have you fixed it? What's the solution?

No, that didn't seem to do anything. I tried using another knoppix-based distribution on it, Feather Linux, but the same problem occured. The CD not running was just a stupid mistake that I fixed.

1) What version of Windows?

2) If you go into the Windows Device Manager and you view devices by connection, is your hard drive connected to some kind of "IDE controller" or some other device like "SCSI or RAID controller"?

I figured it out. I had to use the boot option xdef to load x in default configuration. It wasn't working with th video card right for some reason. The screen still goes out between the boot screen and x, though.
