What kind of CD drive do you have? - many old boxes used special connectors (not IDE) which DSL may not support. An alternative may be to take out the disk, put it into a newer PC (disconnect all other hard disks), install DSL and finally put the disk back.

its a brand new CD drive and its connected to the IDE Bus.
i get the errormessage also when there is no  CD in the drive.
I burned the CD two time with two images from two mirrors .... :-|

I think... that your PC doesn't support ATAPI devices (like newer CD-ROM drives)

Does that PC have a network card? you might try a HD-to-HD install on it

Try booting your old OS, like say MSDOS for example.

Copy the KNOPPIX\KNOPPIX from the CDROM over to C:\KNOPPIX\KNOPPIX

Then boot from the floppy with this command:

Code Sample
dsl 1 vga=normal atapicd noideraid nosound noapic noacpi acpi=off noscsi noapm nousb nopcmcia nofirewire noagp nomce
