I installed dsl to hd  and figured out how to change wallpaper and play a cd..I want to add some of the packages..I downloaded xgammon put on floppy, see the file on floppy and click it and click open and it installed xgammon..great...downloaded xmahjongg.tar.gz..how do I install it..exactly..I copyied it to the lost & found which I am useing to hold files..also have it on the floppy..reason on floppy is I am not yet connected to net on dsl machine so downloading and copy via floppy..if I can install xmahjongg fron tar.gz then I can install the file splitter.tar.gz and use it to connect the xboard which I think is a chess game and install and play chess...I tried opening manager as super user and highlite the xmahjongg file and click MYDSL..in the box below says I need to be log in as DSL..not sure what this means..or how to do it
THE QUESTION IF LOST TO TEXT IS HOW TO INSTALL TAR.GZ to dsl on hd

to load a myDSL  you need to use the filemanager as user DSL. not as a superuser.

From the desktop when I go to manager not as super and highlite the lost and found and click to open it saya I do not have read access to the directory. so I can not open and highlit the xmahjongg.tar.gz file. when I switched to super then I can open the lost and found and highlite the tar file but when I click mydsl it saya I need to log in dsl..may be I need to boot differently..I hit the power and it boots auto to desktop..I like that but when I installed it ask for passwords for root and usr I think and I was not prompted to insert a password at boot time..does it auto boot root to desktop and I need to be loged in as usr to use the auto install mydsl? I am new and confused..WHAT HAVE I DONE..haha sorry and thanks

lost&found is not a good place to save files.  I honestly don't know what its purpose is, but it's not for personal use by typical linux users....this may be why you do not have access to it as dsl.

root user has access to this directory, but is not allowed to install myDSL applications because the process can cause necessary files to be inaccessible by user dsl.  As root you can copy the file into /home/dsl and then install it as user dsl.

A fix for this in the future:
As root, create a directory in /cdrom (same place where lost and found is) and "chown dsl.staff directoryname".  then you can copy downloaded files to this directory from your online system and it will be available to dsl.

Good point..I had a 100meg partition on a second drive for a personal directory but need to learn to access that drive..have created a new directory in the list under temp, lostfound, bin etc called working...in it are pdf, jpg, bevdocs, downloads . I can transfer files from jpg to the backgrounds folder for wall paper. and open pdf files in the reader. I have been able to open the tar and see three folders and a mahjongg file which is executable. when I click it it says below that it could not find the tile..which I see is in the folder above..it suggests the program is installed incorrectly..likely the case...binderdundat befor..so need to understand the file system more before installing..and how to clean up folders...sorry and thanks

I tried to change ownership of a folder in /cdrom on my usb drive, but it said "operation not permitted" though I was logged in as root. Can I have any help with this?

It's probably mounted read-only.  If you boot a frugal system with the "frugal" boot option, you should be able to modify files in /cdrom.  If not, try accessing the drive through /mnt/whatever-it-is.
