remastering a personalized distroForum: Other Help Topics Topic: remastering a personalized distro started by: weirdo Posted by weirdo on Mar. 29 2006,16:50
Hello everyone! I have way too much time on my hands and for the hell of it, would like to make a personal copy of the syslinux version of DSL (not for redistribution) with a personal photo in place of the splash image, a personal message in place of the "DSL" ascii art that mentions there is no warranty, and a personal photo in place of TUX that appears above the warranty.I figured out how to do a spash image. I cannot find the "DSL" text in the source, nor can I find the TUX graphic that I want to change. Any help with the file paths would be appreciated greatly. Thanks WeIrDo (baaaA) Posted by Novice on Mar. 30 2006,14:14
There's a good PDF file that will point you in the right direction here:< http://mysettopbox.tv/remastering_knoppix.pdf > You'll have to boot DSL in "toram" mode and unzip/mount the minirt24.gz file to edit it, then unmount re-zip it when done. I did this on my copy installed on my USB Flash Media. I don't know exactly where the logo is, but I know I found the ascii "DSL" in the linuxrc file (viewed with "vi"). BE CAREFUL changing anything in there and make sure you make a backup copy of your minirt24.gz file. Posted by weirdo on Mar. 30 2006,18:26
Dear Novice,Thank you very much for your help. I will try this. If anyone knows how to change the TUX logo, there are other logos I found that are quite funny and I want to change that too. So if you know where it is, I will find out how to change it. Thanks, WeirdO Posted by Novice on Mar. 31 2006,11:48
No problem, i'm new to Linux period, so bear that in mind. There's an advanced section of that PDF that shows how to mount and access minirt24.gz. Once you've accessed it, you can then browse through everything in it. I'm sure there are better ways of doing it or more specific tutorials out there on the web, I would encourage you to search for ways of modifying the minirt24.gz file. As I said before, I know that will allow you to find and edit the linuxrc file that contains the ASCII "DSL". As far as the boot image, I haven't tried looking for it myself, so I couldn't tell you. Weirdo, look < here > and < here > to see what you need to do to change the logo.Or search the boards yourself for logo.16 Posted by weirdo on Mar. 31 2006,18:02
Dear Clacker Smurf Thank you for your help, however, the bootsplash was easy for me to figure out, I wanted to change the other image of TUX that appears at bootup in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Thanks, WEiRdo Posted by clacker on Mar. 31 2006,19:38
Weirdo, Sorry I wasn't able to answer your question. It's far beyond me. I believe that image resides in the kernel, which is beyond my current abilities.
