Hi,

I'm considering to try out DSL,because I'm in love with lightweight distro's :laugh:

.I have a few questions before downloading it:
1)If it is based on debian,then ''alien'' will work on DSL to convert rpm packages to .deb packages,right?If it isn't based on Debian,is there a way to install rpm packages on DSL?
2)Is it easy to install DSL?
3)Is there a way to install DSL to my harddrive without burning it to a cd,because I don't have any empty cds anymore.
4)This question maybe sounds stupid,but is it as fast and stable as Debian?
Those were my questions.I hope anyone can answer my questions soon.

If you love light weight distros then you need to download dsl...if you do not have a burner, ask someone to do it for you. if you do not have a cd drive it is still possible to install.. everything is relative...dsl is like 50 meg..if you are not impressed, you have no love for lightweight distros

1. Alien works fine. You get get Alien from the MyDSL repository. You can install your freshly converted DEB file by first choose "Enable APT" from the menu and then after done open a terminal window and type:

sudo su
dpkg -i name_of_converted_debfile.deb

2) yes
3) No
4) Faster than Debian. Less stable because it is a mix of Debian packages, non-Debian programs and a special XServer instead of Xfree86 or XOrg. But DSL is still plenty stable for general usage like any other livecd or desktop distro. Just don't try to do an "apt-get dist upgrade" and you'll be fine.

3) It should be possible. First you have to extract the ~50 MB knoppix file from the iso-image ... I'm not sure about the rest of the process.

You could also try out the embedded dsl-version (which runs inside windows), no installation neccesary! Just unzip the file and run the batch-file.

PS: i presume that you can extract the 50 mb knoppix file and the "boot-files" on it but then you would have to install grub on the hd which you want to boot with dsl.

I (almost) have the same problem.. I don't buy CD:s anymore, because DVD:s are a LOT cheaper than CD:s here.. (crazy tax)

cheap bad quality CD costs ~70c
good quality DVD costs ~30c

Luckily I have CD-RW:s... to use with DSL etc..

And yes it it possible to install DSL without burning the CD just like Patrick wrote.
