Hi there. I'm not exactly sure what's up with the latest DSL 2.3 release, but on my machine with the following system specs below, it will not detect the USB mouse no matter what, but it does detect the USB keyboard just fine. I have tried "DSL xsetup" and even "DSL waitusb" to no avail.

Dell Dimension 3100
P4 3.0 ghz w/Hyperthreading
1 gig ram
Geforce 6200 with 128mb ram
Dell USB mouse and keyboard

Strangely enough DSL 2.1 detects the mouse just fine, as does FeatherLinux. :p

I'm using a USB mouse with DSL-2.3. I find that I need to wiggle the mouse a little after bootup to get it going, but after that it's fine.
You picked USB mouse in xsetup, right?

Yes I did pick USB mouse in Xsetup and still no go. I'll try wiggling the mouse steadily as it boot's up. If that work's then I will be amazed. :D

Well, I tried wiggling the mouse and no luck. It basically turned off the USB mouse and it didn't reactivate after that. I did notice though that it mentioned it couldn't find "etc/sysconfig/mouse", which DSL 2.1 never did.

For the heck of it I tried Knoppix 5 DVD version and it detected the mouse fine. So in a way I'm not entirely sure why the old 2.1 release of DSL detected my mouse, but the new one doesn't.

That seems very strange. I've tried several different usb mice and have had no problem. I even tried a Microsoft wireless one and it'sOK. The one I'm using now is a Targus optical USB trackball/mouse that can convert between a standard wheel mouse or a trackball.  Have you tried a different mouse as an experiment?

have the same problem on one of my systems with a optical PS2 mouse plugged into a usb adapter......but mice are easy, I got multitudes of them and no cat.............

DSL 2.1 used a more recent kernel (2.4.31) than DSL 2.3 (kernel 2.4.26). Maybe the Dell mouse needs a newer driver?
Knoppix 5 uses a 2.6 kernel which is more recent, so it should have drivers for newer hardware.

There are a few really advanced mice out there, but I thought they were all pretty much the same technology.

It's possible the Dell Optical mouse could need a newer driver. I got this system brand new back in January so the system is only 4 month's old.
