Hello all. Im having fun using DSL so far. Mainly I use it for IRC for now, just kinda having for with it. The main problem I have is thjat I am not able to save my config. I have followed the instructions on the help screen and also read the FAQ.

After using the Backup/Restore to HDA in the DSL control panel I see that the files (.filetool.lst ) were created that list the files and directories to be backed up. Just as a side note, for us noobs it might help to add that you have to hit the H in the upper corner of the emelfm screen to show the hidden files.

Anyway, so I do the backup. To test it I shut down and restart. I can see that the desktop wallpaper is back to the default (Saturn). I go to restore from HDA in the DSL control panel. Select HDA , hit resotre and na da. Am I guageing this correctly using the desktop wallpaper as an indicator that it did or did not resore my settings?

So I figure I need to get this to restore when booting so I look around the forums and find a helpful post about where to add the cheat code restore=hda into the lilo.conf using nano. Problem is when I try to save to the lilo.conf nano wont. It says could not open file for writing. Read only file system. SO I check the permissions and change them using Emelfm but still the same problem.

Sorry if this is a lot to ask. Thanks in advance for any input!!

same noob as you declare to be...
but: in wallpaper window after choosing the one you want press install (right beside ok), after reboot it will be there.
try changing proxy settings then reboot - looks to be a more valid test of backup qualities, mine works.

"HDA" is not a partition, so it will not back up.  You'll need to specify a real, writeable partition, such as "hda1" or hda2".  You can test it without shutting down...just press the "backup" button.
