I got this after attempting to edit the $HOME/.xinitrc file.  What do I do with this?  Thanks

This is what's called a shell prompt, or sometimes called a bash prompt. It's the way you interact with Bash, or whatever other shell you might be running. Its job is to sit there and wait for you to give it commands.  Try the command "startx".  If you get sent back to the prompt after this, then whatever you did to .xinitrc is preventing X or your window manager from starting.  If you never had X running to begin with, then there is a bigger problem, and you should let us know what error message(s) you receive (as specifically as you can, please).
