Changing the Background Wallpaper to an ImageForum: Other Help Topics Topic: Changing the Background Wallpaper to an Image started by: penpenguin Posted by penpenguin on June 01 2006,22:04
Hello, new forum user, good while time linux user, decent while time DSL user.Anyway, I was just wondering how I may change my background (wallpaper) image to an image I have saved to /home/dsl. I saw the wallpaper tool, and tried dragging and such, but it is either a color selector or pre-used wallpaper section (I am running DSL 2.4). Actually...just as I was typing this I figured it out (figure I will post it anyway, delete if you want ). To add images to the wallpaper selector (under right-click, Desktop, Wallpapers, left-click) all you have to do is move your wallpaper image to the directory /home/[user name]/.fluxbox/backgrounds to (what I used was) emelFM as super-user. That was fun, thanks DSL community . Posted by mikshaw on June 01 2006,22:29
It's usually not a good idea to copy/move files into a regular user's home as root, unless you then change ownership of that file to the regular user. The file will be owned by root, and the regular user will not be able to move, remove, rename, or in some cases even read the file. Posted by TobeK! on June 06 2006,17:47
I[ve recently downloaded a program called chameleon form DSL repository in aplications * i don't remember exactly where * but with this app you can set a new wallpaper pic. I cant tell for sure if the next time you boot DSL the pic will be there? coz i just recently restore my system . But u can give it a try

How do you move files in linux in the cammand line? I've never used a distro where I couldn't click and drag, I'm rather much of a noob.

If you want to drag and drop, install rox.dsl.info. rox is a icon based file manager.

I tried "sudo mv filename.jpg ~/.flutebox/backgrounds" but I got the output "unable to rename 'file.jpg': no such file or directory"

you don't need sudo. Its .fluxbox, not .fluteboxyou can use emelfm or install rox. I don't even use the command line unless i have to. Posted by -Demosthenes- on June 24 2006,08:23
Every time I reboot the wallpaper reverts back the original wallpaper of the "style" or "theme." How can I stop that?

change the line in the styles that points to the old backgroud to point to the new. looks like this-> rootCommand: xsri --scale-width=100 --scale-height=100 ~/.fluxbox/backgrounds/endlessblue.jpg

Where are the styles located? Edit: duh, in the /.fluxbox directory. Posted by mikshaw on June 24 2006,20:09
It would be easier to use the wallpaper app than to edit styles. If you choose "ok", the background is set. If you choose "save", the background is set permanently (written to .fluxbox/init, which overrides styles).

that dosen't always work.
