Synaptic Problem While Downloading JDEForum: Other Help Topics Topic: Synaptic Problem While Downloading JDE started by: penpenguin Posted by penpenguin on June 01 2006,22:31
I was trying to download and install JDE and all of its required packages and then install them using synaptic, so I marked JDE (which marked the other packages as well) and then encountered an error (after downloading all of the packages) at the first part of installation. Here was part of the error message:Never mind, I tried ctrl c and it shut out, but the problem was something with the description file (ends after some more stuff with .deb) and it tried to then overwrite some file, but could not, and stopped the installation. Any suggestions? Posted by penpenguin on June 02 2006,03:31
Well I tried marking the packages again and I get a pop up window with an error (error code 1 I believe), but now my terminal error is back (I copied from my screen on my other computer [by typing alot ]):
Any suggestions? Posted by pr0f3550r on June 02 2006,10:29
Problems with the cache.Run dselect, reset the sources and try again. Posted by penpenguin on June 02 2006,13:35
Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)Is the error in synaptic that I keep getting. I tried what you said, and all of the packages are actually unmarked whenever I go to synaptic, but it goes to the internet download screen (after I mark them again), then starts the error message. I think that the packages are downloaded but just can not install. Thanks professor for your input, you may be right, but I may be doing it wrong. What exactly should I do in dselect (after I get to the screen)? Posted by penpenguin on June 05 2006,12:39
I tried looking at other forums (Ubuntu), and there was a similar problem with a firefox update, but what they did was uninstall the old firefox before installing the new one. Do I have to do that with file-utils, emacs, etc?

What repo are you using? You can copy and paste by highlighting the part you want to copy and and middle click in the web browser to paste, cuts down on typing. Have you gone to /var/cache/apt/archives/ and try to force it? example: dpkg -i --force-overwrite fileutils_4.1-10_i386.deb I usally use sarge repos and don't get to many problems. The first thing i do when i'm up and running is edit my sources.list to sarge then in root terminal > apt-get update >then> apt-get install synaptic I prefer the synaptic in sarge as it is a hell of alot more up to date then the one that DSL installs. sources.list-> deb < http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ > sarge main non-free contrib #deb < http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ > oldstable main non-free contrib #deb < http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ > testing/non-US main contrib non-free #deb-src < http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ > testing/non-US main contrib non-free #deb < http://www.modularity.org/knoppix > ./ Posted by penpenguin on June 07 2006,22:17
THE OVERWRITE WORKED GREAT!I had to isntall some packages manually afterwards, then I just upgraded in synaptic for the rest. But now I have a new problem. I can not figure out how to use it . How am I supposed to get emacs to run jde? What do I have to click once I get into emacs20? Or what do I have to do to get to it otherwise? Posted by kerry on June 07 2006,22:21
Sorry, can't help on that one. I never used emacs or jde.

Thanks anyway, I may do some light reading, but I just need to find someone who knows how to do this.
