I have revived an old 133Mhz P75, 49 Mb memory computer, added a Wifi card and use Opera to surf the net at something like reasonable speed.

A problem I have is that I can't add any other myDSL programs. I would like to add Abiword, but, when I download it with my DSL, the operating system looses the desktop, doesn't shutdown normally and never shows Abiword.

Is the problem that I don't have enough memory? Is there anything I can do? Will the new version 3.0 help?

This is my first use of Linux and I pleased how fast and stable it is compared to the Windows 95 that was on the laptop.

Did you add a swap to act as extra memory?

I have a 200 Mb swap partition that I made active and seems to working but is almost empty, only a few Mb is in there, 1%, even when running Opera.

One thing that puzzles me is that the /home shows 198M/201M and / shows 2.4/3.0 on the desktop after a fresh boot but emelfin indicates /ramdisk/home contains only 15Mb.

This is my first salvo into Linux so pardon me if I'm pretty ignorant about whats happening.

How are you running(hdinstall,frugal,livecd,toram)?

Don't worry about the numbers, it's saying you have 198m free from ...

You would probably be OK with all uci type extenisons.
Or You could try the 3.0RC2 and see if unc type extension will help; it should.

Thanks for that help.

I now find that, paradoxically, I can now run openoffice.org (a uci file) at the same time as opera, but not, the much smaller, abiword (Why is that?). Openoffice runs slowly and really fills up my swap drive and ( I see) home directory.

I'll try 3.0 when it is out of beta. I'm afraid of messing with my installation since I have no CDrom or USB.

It's not a paradox, or even slightly ironic. Open Office is a uci package, which means it's mounted. If you have the file stored on a physical drive the program does not need much additional ram to mount. Abiword is a dsl package, which means it's extracted into ram. Even if you have the *.dsl stored on a physical drive the program will still need much more ram to install the program.

As Robert suggested, stick with the uci extensions and you will be much better off.
