For downloading heavy files, live or HD install?Forum: Other Help Topics Topic: For downloading heavy files, live or HD install? started by: Woodlandjustin Posted by Woodlandjustin on July 01 2006,15:39
I have suse8.1 and windows2000 and I want to replace suse8.1 with 10.0. So I need to download soething like 5CDs. Now the only thing I have that can be online is DSL. Can I just download the files to the desktop or something and then burn them? Or must I install DSL to the hard drive? Like, where would it put the data I download otherwise? Anyway if I must install to the hard drive, will that destroy my suse and windows? Please bare in mind that I do not know about computers and so cannot understand the special language you might otherwise reply with! you can mount your hd and download to there. just put the path to it in firefox download(example: /mnt/hda(?)/(folder)). you should try ubuntu it's only 1 cd and way better and easier than suse.

Thanks for the advise KerryWhat makes Ubuntu better? Plus, is a big difference in which OS, what software I can get for them? I want one which has good choices of programmes I can put on it. Would suse and Ubuntu be the same in that respect? Thanks Justin Posted by kerry on July 02 2006,01:00
There both pretty close. ubuntu is debian based so you got access to thousands of packages. and using synaptic to look at and install the packages is a no brainer. plus since it's only 1 cd i thought you might want to give it a try. they have a live cd/installer so you can try it first.-> < http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=03482#0 >you can also have the cd sent to you for free i just got my 10 yesterday. i always keep 1 and pass the rest out to friends and family. i like the Xubuntu(xfce4) desktop eviroment. Hi Woodlandjustin!I have used SuSE 10.1 for a while and it works very fine on my 5+ years old laptop. Everything works from scratch. So I would give my vote for SuSE. Have fun, meo Posted by sankarv on Aug. 02 2006,08:18
Ubuntu is better than Suse because of the fact that it is totally free. Where as Suse is not 100% free. You can order Ubuntu CDs for free in < UBUNTU > webpage which they ship free of cost. Check it in the website. There are 3 Variants as of now (GNOME based (UBUNTU), KDE based (KUBUNTU) and XFCE based (XUBUNTU)). If you have an active internet connection you can download packages/updates at all times and that would be great. More over I was having DSL and Ubuntu as multiple OSes. They worked well better than DSL-SUSE combination. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Aug. 02 2006,19:15
You can get openSuSE for free. Also, theres even more other variants of ubuntu... Posted by sankarv on Aug. 03 2006,04:37
You mean open suse gives free shipping CDs?
Variants you mean edubuntu or any other? Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Aug. 03 2006,05:55
Free CD's are different.Free, from what I meant, was for accessibility, in which downloading and installing copies are free. In your context, when you say that openSuSE is not 100% free, then you are also saying DSL among others are not - which is misleading imo. Posted by sankarv on Aug. 03 2006,06:03
Each one have their own opinion. In my perspection you need to see the size. DSL is just 50 MB where as Open SUSE comes around 5 CDs.Downloading and installing is pain with large size. Since DSL is light its extremely smooth in this case. For dial-up users like myself and all cannot download such big distros. Possibly DSL like distros are most welcomed by us for downloading as well as internet access. |
