I am using windows 98 in primary partition and DSL in extended partition.GRUB boot loader is used for booting these OSes. Now for past 3 days my system is constantly restarting. In DSL while doing fsck during booting on the midway it restarts. In windows after logging in it restarts. Some times after logging in to DSL after a minute or so it restarts. No session lasts for more than 5 mintes in either. What may be the reason. Please help. Is it any Virus?? Posted by kerry on July 18 2006,07:14
sounds like you got hardware issues, the rebooting is a safety thing. something is not working or something is getting to hot. i'm not sure how much you know about the inner workings of your computer, so i'm not going to go into it.

im using PIII 800 MHz processor with Mercury mother board. I have 128 MB SDRAM. Im quite comfortable with computer hardwares and inner workings. Please tell me anything that affects the system in this issue.

Is it overclocked?Does all fans work (cpu, chip set, ....)? Take out all cables and reseat them - there may be a bad contact somewhere. Posted by kerry on July 18 2006,10:57
adding to skaos list->blow out all the dust, if there is any, then grab a flash light and look around the mother board for any burnt spots(shorts). if you have a spare hd try with that, to see if it might be your hd. last thing will be the power supply, you'll have to use a volt meter to check if it's got constant power or if it's fluctuating. Also check your bios and see if it's set to reboot when power is lost, if it is i would start looking at the power first, check your plugs, start from out side and work your way in to where the power is connected to the board. Have you changed your battery? We just spent weeks here with computer issues that were mostly resolved when we changed batteries. Posted by skaos on July 19 2006,09:43
Would it be possible to underclock it? E.g. a 100 MHz fsb instead of 133.

I suppose, but why? The battery holds the configuration in memory. When the battery gets old the configuration can get corrupted or even lost. Always good to replace it every 2 years. Posted by sankarv on Aug. 03 2006,10:14
i could nt find any reason for that and when a service engiineer is called he said its the fault of both RAM and Mother board. He said both are not functioning. So i disposed them. Anyway thanks for the suggestions. |
