Hello everybody:
running win2000 on a IBM PC340 (p133,48mb ram) is a real pain, so I decided to try DSL....but I tried everything, yet I did not succeed to boot it.
Let's see: the pc has a veeery old IBM surepath bios, so booting from cd is out of the question.
-I put DSL current version boot floppy
- Penguin screen, an that's ok
- from now on, every command I write, DSL starts to load, yet the kernel, past lines:
"HDD:WDC AC21200H, ATA DISKDRIVE
HDD:MAXTOR 87000AB, ATA DISKDRIVE
HDD:PROBING WITH STATUS (0X00) INSTEAD OF ALTSTATUS (0X50)" ---this last probing line twice---
goes:
"oops:0000
cpd:0 eip:0010 (<00000000>) not tainted
eflags:00010282
....etcetcetc...."
....till the last
"unable to handle kernel null pointer deference at virtual address 00000000
BAD EIP VALUE
<0>KERNEL PANIC:ATTEMPTED TO KILL INIT!"
finally stops my adventure.
(I will try to provide a more detailed address of the error, if it's needed: it's a pain to read all the messages in dos, 'cause the screen goes on without waiting for your eyes).

HELP ME, please! I tried booting from hd with grub and loadlin, but no success, so the prob must be in the floppy or in the hardware  :(
I also tried Featherlinux distro and got the same identical prob....so anyone here, please help me!
Thx in advance....

Hopefully this will help.

Yep, it does! Woppeee: booted in featherlinux, so I'm now switching to dsl, 'cause I think it'll be lighter for my oldie.
Here follows an explanation, just in case someone else needs it:
Apparently, the correct line at the boot menu was:
"dsl fromhd=/dev/hdb pci=off",
'cause I put the KNOPPIX folder from the cd distro into my second HD, and deactivate pci recognition.
Thanx a lot, ^thehatsrule^!! :D
Just some question, though, if you can spare a little time:
1. disabling pci, will I miss something of my pc functionalities?  ???
2. is it possible (I will try to solve this myself in the next hours, but asking doesn't cost a cent) to setup the boot chooser (grub or whatever it is) to include this option?
-------------
Woweee....next boot, DSL is on the way! (will post when installed and configured it!   )

1. I suppose if you use any pci slots they'd be disabled...
2. Yes, you can use grub, or lilo (I would say grub is recommended).  Look in the wiki for some guidance in setting that up.
