For a complete newbie please. I done a search and someone wrote some code but i have no idea where to write this code and they werent totally clear what the code done.

I need to transfer some files from my c: to my mp3 player as windows xp is broke :( Please help asap. Many thanks!

There is no "C:" in Linux.  It is most likely /mnt/hda1.
The disk first needs to be mounted.  You should see a little box in the bottom right corner of the screen, with two buttons for mounting.  One probably says "fd0" or something similar.  Click that button until it displays "hda1".  Then click the button that says "unmounted".  If you have no box in the corner, you can use the command "mount /dev/hda1". This *should* mount your XP drive.  I've never had XP, so I couldn't say from experience.

You'll need to do the same for your mp3 player, but i don't know what the device name is....maybe sda1?
