I've been able to see that DSL restore the backup.tar.gz from an old 128 MB USB pen.

I copied the file backup.tar.gz on
256 MB FAT formatted USB pen (*)
256 MB FAT32 formatted USB pen (*)
1 GB USB pen
160 GB external USB HD

But none of these was detect.

(many other 1GB pens in the past.)

Why?

Thanks, Fede

Check partition table consistency with fdisk -l

the 256 USB pen inserted from start
Quote
[/home/dsl]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

  Device Boot    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1   *         1      7295  58597056    c  Win95 FAT32 (LBA)

Instead the (working) 128 USB pen inserted from start

Quote
[/home/dsl]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sdb: 131 MB, 131072000 bytes
9 heads, 32 sectors/track, 888 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 288 * 512 = 147456 bytes

  Device Boot    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1   *         1       889    127983+   b  Win95 FAT32
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
    phys=(1000, 8, 32) logical=(888, 7, 31)

Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

  Device Boot    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1   *         1      7295  58597056    c  Win95 FAT32 (LBA)

Weird enough, one time in the middle of the X session I inserted the pen of 256MB and it was detected as sda1: it never have happened again after that time. I swear.
