I`m a newcomer in linux an I have to copile the kernel to make my modem motorola  sm56 works!
a what is necessary to do this?

I assume you mean "compile".
The closest thread on recompiling the kernel and adding modules I have read here is Juanito's thread on cpufreq in the Laptop section.
