For starters hello community! Now to begin I do know a little bit about linux and I am currently using linux just switching versions because dsl just looks too good to pass up on. Now, if I am to put dsl on a flash drive is it possible to install dsl after I have done so? I mean do I have to have the flash drive inserted at all times? Also, I am unsure from reading around, is installing dsl to your harddrive even possible? Secondly I tried the copy command listed in the wiki for making a floppy so that the usb will boot before the hard drive, and errors are arriving..(just for the record I am using freespire linux as of now, but as I stated hope to switch asap). The konsole is telling me (just for the record, I spelt it that way because that is the way it is spelt on freespire) that the file is not there, however I can very easily see the file on my desktop. Is there a more "windows fashioned" way I can do it? Like just copy the file or something of that nature. Thirdly is it at all possible that somehow through command I can just install the .iso file without burning it to a cd? (please remember I am using freespire linux) Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Feb. 18 2007,07:29
1. yes2. what command did you do, and what errors did you get? (describe what you did in detail) Konsole is just the kde terminal afaik... If it's just "copy" you can do that with whatever file manager that comes with your distro. 3. yes, you can use

Ok I am going to go route 3 then if at all possible. So is there any chance you could give me a bit more detailed instructions? I don't know which bootloader to use so if you could explain which one I should use in which situation or which you prefer that would be appreciated. EDIT: If you could tell me where to copy the files I would also appreciate it (I know I edited again). You just said copy them to wherever. Thanks again Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Feb. 18 2007,16:35
If you mean detailed instructions as in console steps... here's an example This would copy the needed data to /mnt/save (you can change this to where you want to install DSL's files)
For the bootloader, you are already using one on your current system to boot your distro. If you want to stick with it, you could find out what it uses, and then (if possible) modify it so that it sees your new DSL installation. If you want to install a new one, I'd recommend grub. The bootloader info that needs to be added can be found in {sys|iso}linux.cfg under "default" - or you can check the wiki, etc. Posted by Soldat on Feb. 18 2007,17:14
Through consideration it may be easier to just see if I can find someone with a burner that is willing to do it for me. Thanks for all the help and I will probably post here if I need any more assistance. Also, is it possible to partition so that dsl is the only os on my hard drive? I don't want to leave the one I have on my pc on here. I just want dsl and the rest of my hard drive for storage. Thanks Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Feb. 18 2007,19:45
