Can't start from live-cdForum: Other Help Topics Topic: Can't start from live-cd started by: Newbie_666 Posted by Newbie_666 on Feb. 26 2007,13:33
Now, I'm a complete noob with linux, but i'm tired of windows, so I have to learn it When I try to start my PC with the live-cd, it comes up with the error message "Can't find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry." right after "Scanning for USB devices..." I've tried starting with "dsl nousb", "failsafe" and "dsl nousb failsafe", but I still get the same error message. Same error with both the 3.2 and the 3.3 RC1. My connected USB devices is keyboard/mouse and a usb hub. What seems to be the problem? Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Feb. 26 2007,19:11
What kind of CD drive do you have?

It's a NEC ND 3520A DVD burner.

try the toram or tohd

Tried "dsl toram" and "dsl tohd=/dev/hda1", but none of those worked either. Still getting the same error message. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Feb. 27 2007,20:33
Yes, if you have this problem toram and tohd won't work since that only copies the image to another location (before loading it).Are you just booting straight from the livecd? (no bootfloppy, etc.) Is this drive connected by standard IDE? Posted by Newbie_666 on Feb. 27 2007,22:44
I'm booting straight from the CD and the drive is connected by an ATA100 (or is it ATA133?) cable.Maybe some info on my system would help a bit: MB: ASUS P5B-VM AiLifestyle Series (Micro-ATX) CPU: Core2Duo E6300 RAM: 2GB Corsair XMS PC2-6400 HDD: Samsung SpinPoint T133 HD401LJ (400GB SATA300) ODD: NEC ND 3520A (DVD burner) GFX: MSI 7600GT PCI-E Posted by roberts on Feb. 28 2007,03:46
Try noscsi option. Those SATA drives may be your issue.

Okay. Now I tried "dsl noscsi", "lowram", "failsafe" again, "dsl noapic". But it still doesn't work... So I tried some other live-cds: Knoppix, PC Linux OS and Simply MEPIS. The only one working was PC Linux OS. Knoppix came up with the same error message as DSL - even after some different boot options. Simply MEPIS offered me no boot options and went straight into "Can't find filesystem. Halting." This is really annoying! Posted by zmsc1 on Mar. 11 2007,10:13
I'm by no means an expert here, but my next step would be to try the CD in a different PC. Same problem suggests a faulty CD, different or no problem suggests your hardware causes it.Then (if it's your hardware) try Knoppix to diagnose further. Stuart Posted by billyj on April 23 2007,10:04
I have the same exact problem. I think it's specific to the newer Asus boards (I have a P5B). I was able to make the livecd work at one point by simply switching the sata cable. At the moment It's not booting and I can't figure out for the life of me where the problem is. I get the same message even when the sata is completely disconnected. I've tried this on both cd and usb with both dsl and dsl-n and the result is the same: it's booting fine and then that message shows up. They work fine on other computers so it isn't a problem with the cds... Posted by curaga on April 23 2007,16:42
How about "idecd" bootcode?
