You will need the backup/restore system enabled. Check the wiki or the "Getting Started" Dillo page if you don't know how to do this.

The icons are stored in /home/dsl/.xtdesktop.
You cannot make deleted icons persistent with backup/restore, however, since all files are recopied from /etc/skel each time you boot. You can delete these files by adding a command to /home/dsl/.bash_profile or /opt/bootlocal.sh, or by overwriting existing icons with your own (same filenames, different images).

The background is set according to your choice of desktop and/or style.
The default is to set the background from the /usr/share/fluxbox/styles/default style file, which is loaded from /home/dsl/.fluxbox/init. This style cannot always be backed up, but if you change your style to one stored in /home/dsl/.fluxbox/styles (a copy of the original, for example) you can depend on it being restored.
An alternative to backing up a style file is to set your background directly from /home/dsl/.fluxbox/init by adding or modifying the rootcomand line. You can do this with the wallpaper tool, making sure to click the "install" button instead of "ok". This method overrides the background set in a style file, and also applies if you run Jwm instead of Fluxbox.
