I can't load anything from cd or floppy...Forum: Other Help Topics Topic: I can't load anything from cd or floppy... started by: unh0ly_freak Posted by unh0ly_freak on May 01 2007,06:51
I've searched in a few different ways (using the elf file manager thing, or whatever it's called.. using RunApp and browsing.. etc), but whenever I look in the floppy or cdrom directory, there's nothing there. I've tried the mounting tool, but it gave me errors. For the cdrom, it said somethin' like "No medium found", and for the floppy, I forget what it said.I've played music cds on DSL already, and the mount/unmount thing worked once before.. also, when I played a music cd, the cdrom in the mount tool was "unmounted". Also, I can boot from floppy, and then it can read a boot cd after that (which's how I installed DSL).. but yeah, I can't get any apps or files off of a data cd or floppy. Anyone know why?.. Are you using DSL 3.2? The mount tool is broken for floppies and cd's in that version....Tried mounting/umounting manually? sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/auto/cdrom sudo umount /mnt/auto/cdrom Posted by unh0ly_freak on May 01 2007,07:55
I think I'm using 3.3.. whatever the latest version is. But I'll try mounting them manually. With mounting manually, will I have to remount after each reboot? Posted by curaga on May 01 2007,09:43
Yep... Or better to say after you umount and remove a disk, you'll have to mount it again when you put it back in...

I tried mounting in Aterminal, and I got this:
Then I opened the mounting tool, and it said it was mounted (somehow..).. so I browsed to /cdrom, but still, nothing showed up... is there some other way I'm supposed to get to the cd's files? Posted by lucky13 on May 01 2007,12:54
Music CDs aren't mounted. Data CDs are, so long as you have support for the filesystem which the data are written.
What kind of CD? Who burned the CD? Was it multi-session? How long has it been since that drive was cleaned? Posted by unh0ly_freak on May 01 2007,13:14
I don't know what filesystem the data was written in.. I burned the cd using RecordNow on WindowsXP. Am I supposed to use something that burns it so that linux can read the files?.. or something?..
All I know about what kind of cd it is is that it's a cd-r that I burned as a data cd in RecordNow. From what I just read about single session cds and multi-session cds.. I think it's a single session cd, 'cause I can't write anything else to it now. And I'm not sure what you mean by "How long has it been since that drive was cleaned?".. I don't know anything about cleaning drives.. Posted by curaga on May 01 2007,14:15
The default mount point is /mnt/auto/cdrom, not /cdrom... Check there...

Thanks, I'll try that.

Cool, I tried goin' there and I got to the files on the cd.. but I couldn't install anything. I have gaim.deb, audacity.package, and wine.deb.. I thought I had to get the debian files to use'em on DSL? What kinda files am I supposed to get? 'Cause .deb doesn't work.. and .package wouldn't work either.

Also, another question.. I tried opening some files from floppy.. I had to enter the floppy's directory, THEN mount it for the files to show up.. but after that, I could open, copy, or move any of the files. I got an access denied error.. how can I fix this??Thanks again for all the help. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on May 02 2007,05:44
For extensions/packages, first use MyDSL. If not, you can try to use apt (through dsl-dpkg, which can use .deb's).I think you might need to move out of that directory and back in to "refresh" it. Or else you might need to be root. Or mount it with uid=1001 or something. Posted by unh0ly_freak on May 02 2007,06:06
I downloaded the dsl-dpkg earlier and burned it to cd, then copied it to the (I think..) /home/dsl directory. But it won't let me use that either. Is dsl-dpkg supposed to go somewhere specific?

Since those packages that you want are already in mydsl, you should use those first as I have already stated. Also, dsl-dpkg is also a mydsl extension and can be used as such. (i.e. using mydsl-load) You should read some documentation, such as the Local Startup Documentation (first popup under dillo, or see wiki) Posted by Juanito on May 02 2007,12:25
To use a *.deb file you have to load the dsl-dpkg extension which is available in .dsl and .unc format in the DSL repository. Once you have the extension loaded, you type
and the deb package will load or, more likely, give a message complaining that gaim.deb depends on x.deb, y.deb, z.deb which are not going to be installed... Posted by unh0ly_freak on May 02 2007,16:50
I regret to inform DSL fanatics and comfortable dsl users (dunno how else to put it), that I've gone to windows 98. It's a step up from what I originally had, windows 95.. DSL's just too much for me to wanna try and learn right now. Even with all the help I've gotten here, it's just not for me.. :/
