Hi after i load DSL from CD or Hard Drive.
I am unable to use the kb or mouse at the desktop.
yet the kb works during boot and the terminal.
but once it loads the gui the kb and mouse do not work.
(obviously i am a noob)
so any help would be appreciated.

Are your keyboard and/or mouse USB, PS2, or something else?

I've had trouble with USB, in the past (though I haven't tried them with the latest version, yet)...

Also, what options have you tried using at boot? That could (possibly) explain the mouse, but I don't know about the keyboard.

I had the same problem with my logitech USB KB/mouse combo.

A temp. sollution is to use PS/2 adapters if they were included. That worked for me.
