In another form of Linux I was ab;le to change the V & H frequencies
from the standard to what My monitor is capable of.

This greatly increased the ranges of especially refresh possible.

Is there a spot in DSL to do this?

You could try the newer tinyx extensions, but if that doesn't work for you then you will have to get a full x server (XFree86 or xorg)

Beware you can fry your monitor doing that..

Only for older monitors that aren't capable of detecting supported modes.  But maybe now the software is intelligent enough to prevent it if it can't probe for those modes.
