Before you can compile a new kernel, you need to download the kernel source, and then install it. You could use Apt-Get, then you will have all the make files in place to compile a new kernel.

Hes saying that he can't use the internet, hence no apt-get, because he needs to recompile. I suggest apt-getting it but not installing it from a diffrent computer and burn it to a CD and then install the .deb binary to your laptop. I currently do this because my laptop is rather old and has no Ethernet hookups. And by the way, where did you get your Serial -> Ethernet Converter? Would be useful...
