does damn small linux support usb 2.0,im no expert but i believe hotplug manager autoconfigure's usb 1.1 and the like but does it support usb 2.0,im wanting to put some 2.0 ports on my box but not b4 i know before hand,cheers for any help

I've used USB 2.0 with KNOPPIX 3.2 I don't know if DSL has all of the required KNOPPIX USB2.0 drivers but I suspect that it is included with the DSL LiveCD.

My system has an NEC Chipset based USB2.0 add on board. It is a Belkin 2 port PCI card. My guess is that any of the cards out there that are "USB 2.0" and "NEC based" are good to go. For a while, people were recommending the NEC cards over the competition because they had less problems with them. My guess is that nowadays most other brands of USB 2.0 cards are also good although I would still avoid the VIA chipset cards.

From memory, I was able to get my Micro Solutions Backpack CDRW to work in HIGH-SPEED mode by:

(1) Unplugging the device.

(2) Open an Xterminal (rxvt) and type:

sudo su
modprobe ehci-hcd
modprobe usb-uhci
modpobe usb-ohci
modprobe usb-storage
exit

Then plug in your USB 2.0 device and you are good to go.

Newer versions of KNOPPIX (and DSL) may already support this by default and you may not need to manually load up the drivers anymore.

My last try with my Sandisk USB Cruzer mini was not successful. If you boot DSL and then try to insert the flashdrive the laptop locks up. Flonix has the same problem. The flashdrive is USB 2.0, but it should clock down to 1.1 on this machine.

Now if I boot w/ the flashdrive in the laptop, it's OK. Odd. It works fine under Morphix and Knoppix. I have my wireless card module on the flashdrive and I have to be able to access it to get networking.

DSL 0.6.x does support USB 2.0.
DSL 0.5.x does not, it supports USB 1.1

I don't know about hot-swapping them. But if it is plugged in upon boot it is recognized and ready for use when you mount it as /mnt/sda1 or via the mount.app utility.
