Hi guys, i was wondering if you could help me sort out a few things in my head, I have a h/d install of 0.82.
I apologise if these things are listed in the forums, i have searched as much as i can, but there are some things that i just can't find a clear answer too, so if you can answer any of it i would be very gratefull.

1. How do i save the wallpaper, so it will appear on each reboot, same with my choice of not displaying desktop icons. I tryed editing 'xinitrc' and 'filelist' but couldn't make it work.

2. Is there any way of finding out how much hard drive space is either used or is vacant (doesnt matter) on say
hda1' for instance.

3. Is there any way to see how much of the swap partition is being used? and if so is there any way to downsize it and make maybe another partition, or merge it with an existing one.

4. What exactly does the backup/restore utility backup? is it the files the configuration e.t.c. and is there anything wrong with backing up to the same partition as dsl is installed to.

5. Is it ok security wise to run under the account 'dsl' or should i use one i create. also how do you remove accounts once they have been created. I tryed the add/remove accounts but it didnt remove it.

6. (i'm pretty sure this one has been answered a lot, but i can't find it now) How do i keep the '.dsl' files that i download loaded, i.e. they will still be loaded when i reboot.

Thanks for time guys, sorry for these very basic questions.

I try to answer a some of your questions

to 1:
did you run after editing filetool.lst the backup tool and do you restart your computer by typing in the bootmanager command line
Code Sample

dsl restore=<your backup device withou /dev/>

to 2:
yes of course open the Xterminal and type
Quote

df

to 3:
yes open the Xterminal and type
Code Sample

cat /proc/swaps

to change the swap device i would add a new partion as swap and changing the fstab entry for swap. i never tryed a resize tool sorry

to 4:
i dont really understand your question but restore/backup backup everything defined in the filetool.lst to a file called backup.tar.gz on a device witch you define. i use dsl on a usb stick so i backup to sda1. if you have a hd install try hda1 if this is your main drive as backup device. dont add /dev/
to backup on shuttingdown delete the # in the file /opt/powerdown.sh in line 4

to 5:

never added a user but dsl is normal user so its not unsecure i think but i am not sure sry

to 6:

i keep them but putting them in the /cdrom folder. so for example you have firefox.dsl do
Code Sample

sudo cp firefox.dsl /cdrom

dsl loads now after a reboot automaticly firefox

hope that help if not tell me your issues :)

greets

Thanks Doom, you helped a lot.

Theres still a few things, which command do i use in the filetool, to keep wallpaper i tryed,
"session.screen0.rootCommand: bsetbg -f /path/image.jpg"
but it didn't work so i tryed variations on it includeing, forceing it as it said it was on root.

also when i do "cat /proc/swaps" nno swap drives show up and yet when i do cfdisk, it shows me my linux swap drive, so does it mean its not being used, not being recognised or what?

The thing with putting firefox in the cdrom didn't seem to work... there must be a way of makeing .uci and dsl extensions load on start up.

Did you format your newly created swap partition?

I think the command is "sudo mkswap /dev/partitionname"
