Just wondering what kernal is used in DSL?Basicly I am looking for a OS to strip down to run a router. So all that I am realy looking for is support for 3Com ethernet cards (3c905 and 3C996), Iptables, DCHP, a basic web server, and maybe perl. I have used Red Hat in the past but now the basic install is getting so big its no longer feasable. If I can get it striped down below 30Megs for above I can actual load it into the bios space on the hardware and do away with the HD all together (currently the number one point of failure of the system). anyone have any ideas or suggestions of better fit linux packages? May I recommend < SmoothWall Express 2.0 >

All of your requested needs are available thru DSL..The kernel is from the 5-17-2004 version of knoppix. You should be able to easily add the iptables from the repository. see iptables.dsl or rc_firewall.dsl , both have the latest "woody" unstable debian versions of iptables.. Most of perl, the "monkey" web server, FTP server, ssh, dhcp client, and nic support is already in the 50MB DSL distro.. Does your hardware support USB booting? DSL runs great from a USBKey, and can handle routing in the ramspace.. There are also many apps and items you could strip from DSL, replace with the iptables, DHCP server, etc, and remaster.. Search the forums for "remaster"...there are many threads.. You could configure your router, remaster, then loadup from the read-only disk.. For some really small stateful secure router/firewalls, have you looked at the floppy based ones like Freesco or LRP ? Check out www.freescosoft.com for a wealth of apps you can add to your basic iptables firewall. Most run from floppy read-only, and could easily fit in your biosspace. 73 ke4nt Posted by Wire on Oct. 22 2004,22:24
LRP was what we were using before red-hat but unfortunatly it had died (no longer supported) have not looked into freesco will have to check it out. Thanks Peter Posted by mattjackets on Nov. 01 2004,17:54
LRP is still alive in some ways today! but it's now a collection of LRP derivitives called LEAF. check out < leaf.sourceforge.net >+matt |
