I am an experienced java programmer as a career, but only on windows. I just downloaded DSL and I was amped untill I got into it as far as I could figure and there was no nice gui all there was was a typical linux background screen that allows you to mount and unmount and do other comands like cat. Can someone please explain to this linux Newb how to start the shell in version 5.0?

Right click anywhere on the desktop, then look in the menu for xshell and click.
It's been a while since I used version .5.0, we are now at .8.4.

I never get far enough to get the mouse to load or the gui, all I get is a little blue menu that offers dsl xsetup, dsl vga, ect..
I get to loading the "image" it goes through looking for /dev/somthing and then it says no image found, sorry, loading a very small version of dsl. Then I get a screen with red font that says cat mount unmonunt and like 3 other things and below is a line that says #knoppix: and allows you to enter commands.

Obviously you're not getting through the boot up for some reason.

1. Have you checked the md5sum of your downloaded iso? There might be something wrong with the download. There is a windows utility for checking md5sums - do a google.

2. If (1) doesn't help - What hardware are you running it on?  If it's a laptop do a board search for your make & model. Some laptops do strange things with DSL/Knoppix livecd boots, apparently.  If so you might have to try downloading an older version of dsl.

That's the limit of my knowledge I'm afraid.

also, try, at the boot prompt, typing "failsafe"  to boot in failsafe mode.

but first, get 0.8.4 so that you have the latest version.
