Messed around trying extentions & WMs and DSL started crashing
on boot, I figured a bad setup got saved to backup.tar.gz so I
moved it to my HD thinking next time I booted I`d backup, & a
 new one would be made.
Not so, backup doesn`t make one at all now, so I wiped out the
flash drive & copied the iso to it & ran syslinux on it, no change.
I noticed on boot it says: can`t mount CDROM, never had that
problem before, in this case the CDROM is the flash drive?
If so then it couldn`t make the backup to it.
Being as I started fresh I can`t see what`s wrong...   HELP!

***Messed around trying extentions & WMs and DSL started crashing

I am guessing that you have to many dsl's in the root of your device (which is /cdrom in linux) the ramdrive is overloaded and then dsl crashes). What you can do about it: remove a lot of the dsl's (the larger ones in peticulair).

*** I figured a bad setup got saved to backup.tar.gz ***

If there is something wrong with your backup.tar.gz just delete it and start fresh (with no added settings/applications). It is always a good thing to make copies of your backup.tar.gz (or the whole flashdisk) so that you can fall back on it.

*** so I wiped out the flash drive & copied the iso to it & ran syslinux on it, no change. ***

Did you ran syslinux from windows or from linux (live-cd)? In windows there are 2 syslinux-commands syslinux.exe and syslinux.com (if i am remembering right you should use the executable one, not the com-one)

I formatted the flash drive and started clean, so there`s
no .dsl or any other load on boot files.
I syslinux the flash drive with syslinux.com from a boot floppy.
Syslinux.com is for DOS only ( NOT DOS box in Win. ),
syslinux.exe is for NT, Win2k, XP.
As I said there`s the error: cdrom not found,
cdrom not loaded, it always found it before.
In this case the flash drive "sda1" IS the cdrom I beleve,
which explains why it won`t backup.
It`s hard to imagine what could be wrong from a clean
poorman install, it BOOTs fine, just no backup & restore.
I ran scandisk from Win.,   NO ERRORs!     Heeeeelp!!!!!!!!

I am afraid i am not much help to you... I run DSL (0.8.4) from a usb-stick (boot the stick in DOS and then go to DSL using loadlin.exe)
my usb=sda1=/cdrom..

I found the file that points to the backup drive & it shows sda1.
Backup & restore are 1 or 2: scripts / executables?
Where are they & the GUI, & what are they called?
