(Yes, yes, I know...)
486 (50mhz I think. Might be 60mhz)
8mb ram
1.2gig HDD

I don't plan on running X. Basically, I just want to be able to run SSH/iptables on an old machine to play around with.

Problem is, even using these 2 boot options, I get this error. Any ideas how I could install DSL?

dsl 2 = /linuxrc: Cannot fork
dsl tohd=/dev/hda2 (which is a ext2 fs) give me another /linuxrc: cannot fork

try 4 more megs of ram at least. at best 16.
try a 486 with a NCP.
and put that 1.2 gig HD in something that deserves it ;p

anyway, let us know if you add the ram and it works..

You tell me to add more RAM, like it's easy to do. ;^_^

It only has 8 slots, and each has a 1MB stick in, so I only am able to have 8mb, sadly.

I hooked up the old hard drive to a recent machine, and copied the KNOPPIX folder from the ISO (using WinRAR) to the C:\ (hda1).

So I have a c:\KNOPPIX

does it matter that there are other files in c:\?

I try 'dsl fromhd=/dev/hda1', but I get "can't find knoppix filesystem".

That's still farther than before, but not quite far enough. ;)

Try saving it as:

C:\knoppix\knoppix

(lowercase letters).

Also, if it doesn't work, try an older version of DSL like version 0.5.3.1

Saaay... I'll trade ya the 210MB Conner HD from my 486SX fer yer 2.1GBer. :p

All seriousness aside though, since you don't need X and are looking for only limited specific functionality like building a dedicated Internet firewall/gateway (?), DSL might actually be overkill.

A tiny command-line-only Linux distro that runs fine in 8MB RAM might better fit your needs.

Hi

I had a similar problem lately.  I explored floppy based distro's.  You might try sisela.

The downside was I had to figure out how to format a non-standard density floppy.  It worked very well for my need.

Sadly there are some things DSL is not quite suited for.

good luck
