I tried to edit the .xinitrc and now I have the following trouble booting into the guixauth: error in locking authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority xauth: error in locking authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority xauth: error in locking authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority xauth: error in locking authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority giving up xinit: connection refused (errno 111) unable to connect to x server xinit: no such process (errno 3) server error xauth: error in locking authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority I am still trying to learn, and I am going through growing pains such as this. Is this something I can fix or will I need to reinstall again? Thanks in advance. Posted by adssse on Mar. 30 2005,15:43
All I did was put a '#' infront of the line starting with dillo. This is when the trouble started. I then went back and took out the '#', but I am still getting those errors.

What does your .xinitrc look like now?

Thanks for the reply, here is what it looks like:#Put X windows programs that you want started here #Be sure to add at the end of each command the & if egrep -qv noicons /proc/cmdline 2>/dev/null; then enhance &>/dev/null & fi dillo /usr/share/doc/dsl/getting_started.html &>/dev/null & fluxbox That is it. I believe it is the way it was originally but am still having trouble. Posted by mikshaw on Mar. 31 2005,05:47
yeah...that's the same as the original.I think the problem is something else, and it sounds like .Xauthority is the trouble. Problem is i don't understand exactly what that file does.... Personally I'd try moving that file elsewhere temporarily and see if a new one is generated. I wouldn't delete it in case it can't be recreated. Posted by Waterns on Mar. 31 2005,15:52
Yes I seemed to have to that same problem so where along the lines of my install. I think it disappeared after reinstalling DSL. Posted by jshaw on April 01 2005,05:12
I had that error when I was first learning to use DSL and Linux in general. Have you edited some files as root when you could've done otherwise? Permissions can be a touchy subject when launching certain programs.jshaw Posted by mikshaw on April 01 2005,05:21
editing existing files as root won't change permissions, but you have a good point....if a file in /home/dsl is owned by root and not readable/writeable by dsl there could be trouble

hmm, I dont remember if I was root or not. I just opened up the terminal window and edited it. Then I exited the gui and was going to go back in but ran into those problems. I didnt have a problem with the file before I had just read a post regarding it and was trying to learn more about it.

I know this is an old post, but I just had this problem and figured it out. For those of you who need a solution, it is, in fact, the permissions that are the problem. To fix this:1. Open Xterminal and type (without quotes) "sudo emelfm" 2. Browse to /home 3. Right Click on /dsl and go to Properties-->User/Group 4. The fields should be User: dsl Group: staff 5. Make sure that recurse directories is checked 6. Apply and restart --EDIT-- My problem arose from editing a .dsl file. You may have a faulty .dsl, try moving any new or newly edited .dsls before restarting. |
