Hi,
I have made a live cd (it works on other machines) but my pc (pentium 133 Win98) refuses to recognize it as a bootable cd.
It does recognize a win98 cd as such.

what could be wrong?

P.S. I'm a total newbie at this

Try one of the boot floppies. Look in the current/ directory of any of the mirrors.

Or you can use Smart Boot Manager. It works just as good and a lot faster.

Try downloading and burning the syslinux version of DSL. It is made for older machines that refuse to boot from the "standard" dsl.iso which happens to be isolinux.

Thanks,
I'll go for the syslinux option since my floppy drive has died on me some time ago and I still haven't got round to reving it.

I'll let you know how it turns out

Syslinux was just the ticket, it works fine now.

i'm a linux noobie and wanted to start with a live cd before i went on to a HD install..i've heard a lot of good things about DSL and i've tried to run it a few times. I get to a dos-like screen with a Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 logo above the command line...i presume that this is a dosprompt....what do i do now? i've tried "knoppix toram", "toram", "dsl toram", "boot" but all i get are filename or command not recognised...pls HELP ME!!!!
I want to try this thing out....

You burnt the CD wrong; it is a DR-DOS bootable CD, presumably with DSL as the data content.  You need to burn it as a CD image.

I know I am odd man out because my hand has been held for so long ...
I am an old school Mac user (system 7 thank you very much) but the whole OSX thing got me onto the Linux tip... so I got an (very) old pc to mess around with. I get the DSL iso burned it even boots from the disk but after all the hardware is recognized and all the lovely linux goodie pop up the screen goes kinda grey and nothing happens....

the machine:
333 cyrix (ooohhh yeah I remember those)
160MB RAM
4MB ati "rage"
2GB hd

anyone know it this is a hardware problem or an intance of interfence btween keyboard and chair?

Sounds like you are just starting X, which isn't recognising your video properly.

Try typing at the boot: prompt -
