is there any codec i can use to play avi files on linux? i have this avi file using ms-cram codec and i want it to be played on my linux. pls help.

Download and install < VLC media player >

Perhaps this would make a good MyDSL application!! (hint hint)

For a normal install, do:

# apt-get update
# apt-get install gnome-vlc libdvdcss2

It even has a mozilla pluggin!
