I am a new user and I do not know very much about Linux. I am going to try to teach myself. But I have a machine running Windows xp and I want to put DSL on it. I am wanting to put it on a cd and install it over the windows os. Can someone please tell me what to download and what else to do. I appreciate it, thanks...

Start by downloading the dsl-1.2.iso file from here< download > Then using your burning program to burn it to a cd by selecting an option such as "burn image". Depending on the program that might not be exactly what it says, but similar. If you are talking about a hard drive install here are a couple of links to get you going. < http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/talk/node/64 > < http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/dsl-hd-install.html > Good luck and enjoy Posted by RoGuE_StreaK on June 15 2005,07:21
Would probably be a good idea to use DSL as a live CD for a while, untill you get the hang of it, before wiping windoze.Of course, by throwing yourself in the deep end, you may learn faster! You can use the same CD iso to both run as a liveCD and install to HD, so you may as well try the first (and main, as this is what it's designed for) option. Then if you like it, and have figured out the intricacies, you can go ahead and wipe your system. If not, no harm done. Posted by kriggo15 on June 15 2005,11:07

I suggest you using a pc emulator like 'qemu' to run DSL first. You should download the iso image of DSL and try in it (bochs or vmware is also an emulator) or probably a livecd solution will let you enjoy DSL without having worry about anything might happen to your current installation.

Use your old pc.Hopefully it will boot from cd, type; failsafe. If it does not boot failsafe, I think you will have to make a boot floppy. |
