Hi!

As a n00b to Linux and DSL I must say I'm impressed with the coders work!
But of course there are some configuration issues.

I'm running DSL on a Toshiba Sattelite 1410 laptop,
from a liveCD running thru ramdisk and using my
256 mb. MP3player/USB drive as an mounted
device/temporary harddrive.

When I try to save my options, I tell my filetool.lst to monitor
my programsfolder (/opt/programs). I then DSL restore.
This does not restore my installed programs (BT etc.).

When I save the .DSL files directly to the USB drive and
then DSL mydsl=sda1 it restores my programs, but not my
user-configured options like themes.

I've also tried to do a manual back-up/restore.

Any one know some helpfull hints?

The system is working as designed.

If you wish to "optionally" load your programs, you should save them directly to your usb drive in this location:

<usbdrive root folder>\optional

where "optional" is in all lowercase letters.

Then you can optionally load them after bootup by using the Fluxbox main menu (Right-click desktop menu).

filetool.lst doesn't really "monitor" anything. It's merely a list of files and directories that will be backed up. In order to utilize this function, you'll need to specify a writeable partition on which to backup (this can be done through the control panel). This will create an archive of everything listed in filetool.lst when you shut down, and hopefully restore it when you reboot (if the archive is located on a partition that DSL can find when you boot up).

Backing up programs installed via myDSL is generally unnecessary, since you can have them loaded automatically as you have seen, or have them available to install from the myDSL menu as cbagger said.

Your configs are mostly found in /home/dsl. Any files you want backed up should be added to filetool.lst (in emelfm you can select the file(s) and press the "Add2filetool" button).
