1. Open the emelfm file manager.2. Click ONCE on the filetool.lst filename. 3. Push the "Edit button" 4. The file contents will appear in the Beaver text editor window. Add a new line to the beginning to the file: home/dsl/.mozilla 5. Press the "Save" floppy disk icon on the toolbar. 6. Close down Beaver and Emelfm. 7. Right click on the desktop and choose from the menu: System -> Backup/Restore 8. Type in the place where you want to store your backup file. For example: fd0 = usually your floppy disk drive sda1 = usually your USB thumb drive hda1 = First hard drive partition on IDE master drive usually C:\ drive for MSDOS/Win95/Win98/WinME and so on. 9. Then press the BACKUP button. To restore, type this in at bootup time: dsl restore=xxx where xxx is the name of the backup device from step 8. 10. Enjoy MAKE SURE THAT YOUR USB THUMB DRIVE IS ALREADY PLUGGED IN AT BOOT TIME OR IT WILL NOT BE AUTOMATICALLY DETECTED. Posted by cbagger01 on April 11 2005,04:19
I don't use ppp but my guess is that you need to addopt/ppp to your filetool.lst Otherwise, the instructions are the same. Posted by jls legalize on April 11 2005,14:59
I don't need to write restore=xxx, dsl find my backup (hda1) automatically

I am not sure, but either restore=xxx will speed up the boot process, or maybe it is required when your KNOPPIX file is not located in the same place as your backup.tar.gz file.

Doesn't matter what drive it's on. If you do not specify a partition, and do not use "norestore", then apparently all readable partitions are searched until a "backup.tar.gz" is found. Specifying a drive is particularly useful when you have multiple backups from which to choose, and i assume you're correct about speeding up the boot process...although i can't see it making a noticeable difference unless you have a bigillion partitions

hey, thanks guys! it works. do i have to restore every time b4 I shutdown? how do I find the program files? Adding the home/dsl/.mozilla backs up my browser stuff but can't seem to find it in emelfm directories. the links on my browsers stay but cant seem to get the firefox extension to work. sorry guys, i'm really new to this but hv loadsa enthusiasm to learn

All files and directories that start with a period "." character are considered to be a hidden file in unix/linuxPress the "H" button at the top of the emelfm window and you should be able to see them. Once you specify your backup location it should be automatically done when you shutdown. At least this is how it works in my embedded USB system. Posted by spacebaby on April 18 2005,08:22

Ok, just figured this out...Thanks all for the learning experience, and such a top little OS. I am running the embedded version from my USB 1.1 Key, a little slow, but i am patient! My dsl-windows.bat file is as follows:
REM Start qemu on windows. @ECHO OFF START qemu\qemu.exe -L qemu/ -enable-audio -localtime -kernel linux24 -initrd minirt24.gz -hda KNOPPIX/knoppix -hdb qemu/harddisk -append "qemu sb=0x220,5,1,1 frugal quiet dsl restore=hdb mydsl=hdb" CLS EXIT
and my filelist.lst is like this....
opt/ppp opt/bootlocal.sh opt/powerdown.sh opt/.firefox_plugins home/dsl/filetool.lst home/dsl/.mozilla home/dsl/.fluxbox/backgrounds home/dsl/.fluxbox/styles home/dsl/.fluxbox/init home/dsl/.xinitrc home/dsl/.xserverrc home/dsl/.bashrc home/dsl/media home/dsl/.sylpheed home/dsl/Mail
This setup will save my email (and account info), my default fluxbox theme, any media, my firefox bookmarks. I just right click on the desktop, select "System" -> "Backup/Restore" -> "Backup" (hdb), OK. The next time i load up my DSL i have all my favourite stuff back. I will invest in a better Pendrive soon, one with booting capabilities, until then this works a treat and saves me taking my laptop everywhere with me. I can just borrow a pc and check my email easily. Hope this helped a bit. Posted by cbagger01 on April 18 2005,16:19
I'm sure that it will help someone down the road.FYI, if you are using DSL embedded it should automatically backup your files upon shutdown of the operating system. Do you see a little "Backing up files to xxx .... done" message in the window right before the KNOPPIX halted message appears? |
