I have a laptop with DSL 1.0rc1 that I would like to install some mydsl extensions on. How do I go about making mydsl command run as root? Or even better can i switch to the root user do what I need to do and log back out? Remember that I dont have a multiuser install.I have tried "sudo" and "su" but then I dont know the mydsl install command. Posted by mikshaw on April 16 2005,00:33
"sudo su"The command is "mydsl-load appname", although there's really no point in running it as root. The actual installation of files is done as root anyway....you're just adding more work for yourself. Posted by ke4nt1 on April 16 2005,06:30
In my conversations with roberts, we both see issues with loading extensions as the root user.. e.g. Open emelfm as super user, Install a .dsl file ( highlight barrage.dsl , and click the mydsl button ) Now minimize emelfm .. Now open an XTerminal from the desktop. Wow, my desktop is now all ROOT , which is not a good thing.. Exiting X , and restarting with "startx" fixes the issue.. BUT, if you were to open, say sylpheed, or firefox, while in this condition, your mail, bookmarks, etc. would be owned by ROOT, making a journey back into them as user dsl painful, if not impossible.. Linux/Unix 101.You should never run your system as root. You should only start a process as root only if you know why you need to do so. |
