There is no root password on a default DSL system.  If you are using a harddrive install, it's recommended that you set a password with "passwd" command after logging in as root.

To use root for a single command, do "sudo <command>" or "sudo su -c <command>".
To log in for multiple commands, do "sudo su".

DSL doesn't have built-in support for NTFS beyond just reading the filesystem

If you need to do NTFS rescue work, download the latest version of INSERT.

Based on DSL/KNOPPIX concepts, INSERT is designed for PC rescue work and it includes Captive NTFS which allows (slow) writing to an NTFS partition.

INSERT is a 50MB download just like DSL.

If you don't mind a bigger download, the Ultimate Boot CD with INSERT full version is also very nice.

The latest standalone INSERT is better if you have SATA hard drives because it contains a newer version of the linux kernel that has better SATA support.
